History of the Mthashana / Sikhobobo War
The battle was fought on 6 May 1902. The Mthashana war is also known as Sikhobobo’s war. Sikhobobo was a descendant of Sibiya, born of Babakazana Sibiya. The reason this war is named after him is that he was the one who led it. Sikhobobo Sibiya rose to prominence since the time of King Mpande, and was still prominent during the reign of King Mamonga [Dinuzulu] as the Mthashana war broke out during the reign of King Mamonga. Sikhobobo Sibiya was the former chief of the Abaqulusi, appointed by King Mpande as chief of the Abaqulusi. However, the English eventually promoted the Mnyayisa ka Mthakathi of Abathethwa as the chief of the Abaqqulisi, which brought down Sikhobobo. Another former Abaqulusi chief is Ntanjana Mbatha. Mnyayiza Mthethwa was the son of Princess Ziwelile of Mpande. Princess Ziwelile’s army was Mkhandandlovu.
Sikhobobo of Mabhabhakazana Sibiya was the chief of the Abaqulusini. When the Boers fought against the British from 1899 to 1902 Sikhobobo fought against the British and fought with great force. The English overcame Boers in this war . But the Boers and the English eventually agreed forgive each other. That’s when the trouble started for Sikhobobo. Boers in Vryheid said they did not want Sikhobobo to rule over the Abaqulusi, he must be sent to exile. However, Sikhobobo was not deported but demoted. J Shepstone, the magistrate of Vryheid, appointed Mnyayiza Mthethwa as king of the Abaqulusi from 1902. Sikhobobo became Mnyayiza’s chief executive and adviser
The Boers harassed the Abaqulusi, taking their cattle, and set fire to their homes. In all of this the Boers claimed to be punishing Sikhobobo for his role in the British war. Sikhobobo eventually got angry and declared war , him and his men settled in Vryheid. The Boers, on the other hand, continued to harass the Abaqulusi, burning down houses, waking up a women at night forcing them out of the huts so that the they could properly burn the huts without anyone inside. The Boers who were at the forefront of harassing Abaqulusi were John Potgieter and Louis Botha. While Boers were busy burning homes of Abaqulusi Sikhobobo and his men were in Vryheid planning to attack.
These two sides eventually battled on Mount Mthashana, a 38-mile [38 km] drive from the town of Vryheid to the northwest. The area had been owned by the Ntombela family before the Zulus settled on Zulu land. In this batle the Zulus were victorious
The Abaqulusi army left the Railway station led by Sibiya himself. He eventually composed a song to inspire young men and the courage that the song went on.
